2010 Mercedes E 550 Coupe: Smooth, luxurious, and very entertaining.

When I say Mercedes, what do you think of? Is it the sporty two-door convertible or the roomy four-door luxury version?
After a short encounter with the new 2010 Mercedes E550 Coupe, Joe and I feel that the folks behind the three-point star have rolled out a car that took a lot of the best of both. What they have come up with is a car that raises the sport/luxury bar.
The new E-Class 550 is a very fast ride, thanks to its 5.5-liter V-8 that pushes a lusty 382 horses to the road, with 391 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s paired to Mercedes' own 7-speed Touch Shift automatic which gives the driver the chance to use the paddle shifters while running smoothly through the gears. This gearbox even has two reverse ratios that are selectable by the Comfort/Sport button on the console, which affects throttle response and shift points.
If there's a faster, better-behaved V-8 around, Joe and I have not driven it. It even sounds a sultry song as you press it to showcase its 0 to 60 mph speed in 4.7 seconds and a quarter mile of 13.1 sec. at 108.9 mph.
Inside, it’s everything you expect from a performance luxury Coupe. The Mercedes E550 is intimate yet roomy up front for both pilot and passenger. The air-cooled adjustable seats wrap you securely as you overlook the chrome-edged burl walnut trim that spans the dash. There is a five dial instrument cluster featuring a center section display that issues all sorts of useful information from radio stations to compass directions. Surprisingly, the Coupe has more headroom up front than the four door version. Coupes aren't usually very practical; however this new E550 Coupe can carry almost 16 cubic feet of gear in the trunk.

Looks do matter and the 2010 E550 Coupe really shines in this area. As with countless other Benz 2-door hardtops, this E is a true pillarless coupe, with a subtle convex arc to its beltline, and rear windows that roll down. The end result is a sexy, wide and ground-hugging look that brings to mind a chiseled athlete dressed for a night of fun on Las Olas.
The 2010 E550 is what a Mercedes coupe should be. It's smooth, fast, luxurious, and very entertaining. With a price tag that starts at $54,650 and runs up past $65,000 when the Premium and Appearance Packages are added, it is a fare price for one of the finest cars we have driven this year.
